Does a fancier engagement ring set couples up for divorce?

On Behalf of | Feb 11, 2021 | Divorce

South Carolina couples shopping for engagement rings might want to consider choosing a modest one over a more expensive, fancier one. Research shows that not only does purchasing a less expensive ring help pad your wallet, but it can also save you from problems that lead to divorce.

The more costly the ring, the more likely to divorce

Studies have concluded that those who spend between $2,000 and $4,000 on an engagement ring are almost 1.3 times more likely to divorce compared to those who spent between $500 and $2,000 on a ring. This correlation may seem to be a stretch to some, but there are some logical reasons behind it.

Focusing less on your relationship and more on wedding excitement

During the excitement of the engagement and wedding planning, it is easy to lose focus on what is truly important in your relationship like values, compatibility and other beliefs. Spending money on an engagement ring that you cannot afford may put financial stress on you and your partner before the wedding takes place.

Though the wedding industry wants people to believe that lavish weddings and expensive rings are the best way to show love for each other, it simply is not true. Mismatched spending habits and debt are key issues that can lead to divorce. Focusing on material items can also distract you from recognizing issues in your relationship that might eventually lead to divorce.

Build a strong foundation

Instead of purchasing your partner the biggest diamond or throwing the fanciest wedding, begin your life together building a strong foundation. Spending money on items like pre-engagement counseling in lieu of, or even in addition to, a nice ring is a way that you and your future spouse can be certain you are on the same page with your relationship.
