It’s important for spouses to notice how their relationship is going. When both parties are alert and present it makes it more likely they can do something about minor issues before they turn into major ones.
Yet this does not happen in many marriages. It’s why so many people are blindsided when their spouse asks for a divorce. You can’t turn back the clock, but the following are warning signs that often indicate it is already too late.
1. You are not willing to do the little things for each other
In a healthy relationship, you will do favors for each other. That might be them running the folder you have forgotten to work for you. Or you putting on that little red dress they want you to wear tonight, even though it’s a little too cold. When one or both of you can no longer be bothered to do things for each other, it’s a bad sign.
2. You are disrespectful toward each other
You shouldn’t have to tell your spouse not to roll their eyes at you. They shouldn’t have to ask you to stop treating them poorly just because they forgot their keys again. When partners begin to treat each other with contempt, rather than love and understanding it is a major warning sign.
3. The spark has gone
No one expects you to still be struggling to keep your hands off each other like when you first hooked up. But if you never touch each other, if you never grab a quick kiss or want to snuggle up together on the couch then you have to wonder what is keeping you together. You can hang out with a flatmate or friend, but some romantic spark is crucial for a marriage.
If you recognize any of these warning signs or others that make you think your marriage is heading for the exit, then it may be wise to learn more about how a divorce would work.
