Is money the leading cause of divorce?

On Behalf of | Aug 6, 2024 | Divorce

Finances are a large issue in many marriages. Many couples discuss how their money is spent, how much money should be saved, how money is split and how much is being made.

Financial difficulties may not be the leading cause of divorces, with many being caused by infidelity, substance abuse and commitment issues. However, it is estimated that about 45% of couples argue about finances with a quarter of couples saying that finances are the largest issue in their relationship.

Why do financial problems lead to so many marital issues? Here is what you should know:

Common financial issues that lead to marital difficulties

Many couples do not agree with how joint finances are spent and saved. One spouse may be more willing to place money into savings while the other may want to invest their money. These different goals and ideas about spending, budgeting and savings can lead to many arguments. However, there are many more causes of marital strain because of financial difficulties, including:

  • Spouses may argue because of earning differences. If one spouse earns more than the other, there may be expectations for the other to work to match that figure or for the spouse to provide for the other.
  • Debt can cause a lot of stress and frustration. If a spouse is hiding things and building up more debt, addressing this can lead to marital strain.
  • A spouse may try to use their money to control the other. This spouse may expect the other to stay home and care for the house or children. This kind of role could make the other spouse feel uncomfortable and restricted.

A large part of divorce is asset distribution. People going through a divorce may want to protect certain assets and fight against debt. Legal guidance can educate people on their asset protection options.
