Social media divorce mistakes to avoid

On Behalf of | May 21, 2021 | Divorce

South Carolina couples whose marriages are ending will likely have many instances where their emotions take over. While you might think about discussing them on social media, that’s not always the best solution. In fact, there are some necessary mistakes that you need to avoid as you go through the divorce process.

Trying to be the first to post about your divorce

Going through a divorce is a big challenge for both you and your spouse. While it’s human nature to want to be the first person to break the news to other people, this isn’t the best solution. Rather, you should speak with your spouse to determine a social media strategy for announcing your divorce. You should discuss whether or not you would just like to keep it quiet or if you would like to make a joint post.

Bashing your spouse

It’s very likely that you are going to have times throughout the divorce process where you’re very unhappy with your spouse. While you may want to publicly humiliate them on social media, that’s not the best option. When you say mean-spirited things on social media, it helps to increase the tension between you and your spouse throughout the divorce process. In addition, the bad things that you post on social media can be used in court as a way to discredit you.

Social media has become a necessary part of many peoples’ lifestyles. As you enter into the divorce process, it may seem completely natural to want to post information about it on social media. However, it can create more problems than it is worth.
