2 financial issues that may lead to divorce

On Behalf of | Oct 30, 2025 | Divorce

During a divorce, financial issues often take center stage because people debate how to divide their assets – income and earnings, investments and savings, retirement benefits, real estate, etc. But even before the divorce, it can be important to consider the couple’s financial situation. In many cases, the divorce itself is caused by these financial problems.

This does not necessarily mean that a couple does not have enough money to make ends meet or is experiencing other traditional types of financial stress. Even wealthy couples can run into these problems and get divorced. Below are two common examples.

Financial infidelity

When couples are dishonest about their earnings, spending or other financial moves, it is known as financial infidelity. This can break down the trust in a relationship. If one spouse finds out that the other has been lying to them about how they have been using their funds, it can undermine the trust in the entire relationship. They may start wondering what other things their spouse has not been honest about.

Different perspectives

Another issue is that two people may simply view money very differently. A common source of conflict is when one person is a spender and the other is a saver. They often start to feel like they are working against each other, rather than working together as a married couple.

Navigating a divorce
